Optimal Advantage boss
gives Leap Day to
employees, community

by Beth Ewen

The president of Optimal Advantage, Flora Delaney, gave her employees Leap Day off this year, with encouragement to spend the day giving to the community.

?I loved the idea of surprising them with the day,? she says. ?My challenge to them was to try to use it to connect back to the things that they know in their hearts they?ve been neglecting. I?m planning to volunteer my time with Metro Meals on Wheels.?

Delaney bought the retail consulting firm and took over as president in January; she had worked there for two years.  She got the Leap Day idea from a magazine.
?This is really hokey but I saw an editor?s letter in a magazine, and this was a woman saying she was going to take the day for herself. I thought, she really went the wrong way with that,? Delaney says.

?I woke up the next day and it was still with me. I thought, you know, I have my own company. I could make this happen at my company.? Optimal Advantage has 10 people here and about 25 to 30 across the United States.

Delaney says she made a point not to ask her staff what they planned to do with their day, because she didn?t want to pressure them to volunteer.
