Do-it-yourself painting
party provides low-cost
art at new Embers HQ

After Augeo, Embers and Joey’s Only employees moved into new headquarters near University Avenue in St. Paul last August, they didn’t have a budget for artwork. So David Kristal, CEO of all three companies,  invited employees to come in on a Saturday for a painting party.

The company supplied canvases, brushes and paints, and employees created a couple dozen pieces that now adorn the white walls. They range from a realistic apple to a yellow-and-pink abstract. Kristal says they’re hardly masterpieces — although he did say he liked one painting of a carrot. But employees had fun making the paintings and they spark conversation when visitors tour the premises.

Kristal says visitors to headquarters are more frequent now that they’ve secured exclusive U.S. rights to Joey’s Only Seafood Restaurants. Potential franchisees used to visit for a once-a-month “discovery day” to learn about the franchise. Discovery days are now held twice a month to keep up with the interest.
