Upsize Growth Challenge: Update 3

New store in Woodbury
is highlight of P.M.
Bedroom Gallery’s year

Jim Borofka opened a new P.M. Bedroom Gallery store in Woodbury a year ago, on Aug. 13. He and his business partner Maynard Huth own that store, which cost $3.5 million to build out, and one other.

“The visibility was a very good decision,” he says about the new location. They recently closed a third store, which was in leased space in Maplewood.

“We’d have our eye on Maple Grove when cash permits,” Borofka says about opening yet another store, but probably not until 2007. P.M. Bedroom Gallery was one of three winners of last year’s Upsize Growth Challenge.

He relates other progress: “We’ve better defined ourselves,” Borofka says, as a retailer selling high-quality, made-in-the-U.S.A. furniture. “We’re not in the business of seeing how cheap we can be.”

He’s also purchased a new computer system, the same one used by certain large competitors. The store offers custom-built furniture, and the new software will calculate different pricing and costs for different woods, among other things.
